Warriors miss out on superstar with back-to-back draft blunders, dynasty in a chain of woes

Release time: 2025-09-17 PE Score

The Warriors dynasty was built on Curry, Thompson and Green, but the draft decisions since then have left a series of "what ifs" that fans can't ignore

2020: The Timberwolves reportedly tried to trade the Warriors for the first overall pick, and after being rejected, Minnesota selected Anthony Edwards and the Warriors selected James Wiseman with the top pick.

Same year: Jalen Rose reveals that the Warriors had committed to LaMelo Ball with the top pick, but ultimately passed. The Hornets drafted him third overall, and he quickly grew into a cornerstone of the team.

Tyrese Halliburton is another regret. Pre-draft tryouts were so good that Bob Myers admitted the team had seriously considered selecting him, but stuck with Wiseman. Halliburton followed up by becoming an All-Star defenseman.

2021: The coaching staff and scouts favored Franz Wagner with the No. 7 pick, but Joe Lacob stuck with Jonathan Kuminga. Wagner was drafted by the Magic and quickly became the league's top 3-D forward. Kuminga, on the other hand, is now embroiled in a free agency fiasco and is at odds with the team over his future role. From Edwards, to three-ball, to Halliburton, to Wagner, to Kuminga's uncertain future, the Warriors' draft history has become a series of cyclical films of missed opportunities and new dilemmas.
